The Seven-Ups reunited Scheider with actor Tony Lo Bianco (“Vito Lucia”) and stunt driver and actor Bill Hickman (“Bo”), who drove in the highly acclaimed car chases in The French Connection and Bullitt. The Seven-Ups was the only directorial effort of Philip D’Antoni, producer of, among numerous films, The French Connection and the 1968 Warner Bros. According to modern sources, Grosso appeared in a cameo in The Seven-Ups as the counterfeit courier at the beginning of the film. ![]() ![]() Grosso went on to produce and provide technical advice on numerous successful feature crime films. ![]() Although Buddy is never referred to by his last name in The Seven-Ups, most sources agree that it is the same character as that in The French Connection. The Seven-Ups was also based on Grosso’s experiences as a police detective. Jerry Greenberg’s onscreen credit reads: “Associate producer and Supervising film editor.” A Nov 1972 LAHExam item noted that Roy Scheider, cast in the lead role of The Seven-Ups, had portrayed “Buddy ‘Cloudy’ Russo” in Twentieth-Century Fox’s 1971 production The French Connection, which was based on the true-life experiences of New York police detective Salvatore “Sonny” Grosso. An HR news item stated that Canadian television writer Phillip Hersh was set to write the screenplay for The Seven-Ups, but his contribution to the completed film, if any, has not been determined. ![]()
